It’s no lie that I like to have a budget. While some people might think that budgeting is restricting, I’ve found that it brings a sense of freedom to our family. Don’t worry if you think about a budget, as I once did. A budget once sounded like walls coming in on me when I was trying to enjoy life and live it to the fullest.
However, life happened. He’s five years old now and that’s about how long we’ve been living on a budget. It’s the most freeing thing you can do. Giving each dollar a purpose and a meaning means that when we splurge on an evening out, I feel excited to enjoy the evening instead of feeling dread as to whether or now we can afford it.
One important part of our budget is a rainy day fund. It’s money we’ve set aside for the unexpected. It could be an unexpected car fix, a sump pump that needs replaced immediately, or something as big as a bathroom tub redo for the second time because of plumbing issues. (Yes, I speak from experience with all three of those things.) A rainy day fund is no fun. It’s something we feel we need to have but it’s not really for the things you want to spend money on – but you have to.
As the new year started this year, I started to think about how we use our rainy day fund. It’s been something of a necessity but what if we also had something of a sunny day fund as well. We’ve got big goals for our home and they’re exciting things to us. We want to replace our windows, paint our kitchen cabinets and even remodel our basement some day. Some of the items seem so close and others seem so far away, yet they’re exciting and things we want to do and things we will enjoy.
Do you have a sunny day fund? I think everyone should save for a sunny day. It’s a fund that has the feeling of confidence because your goal or aspiration can become a reality. It reminds me of this picture from last year. It was the first day on the playground after a long winter. I can see the pure joy on my youngest kid’s face as he finally had a chance to play outside after months of waiting. I think of our family’s sunny day fund like that. We’ll have months of waiting and saving, but we’ll have that day of pure joy when it all becomes worth it!
