With two young kids, my husband and I don’t get out on dates too often. There are a couple of reasons that it doesn’t happen, one is cost. It’s pricey to go out to dinner and make a night of it. We also are so busy during the week, that a “night in” date night is just more practical.
That being said, every few months we like to go out and have an EPIC date night. Oh yes, we save up all our date night points and go all out. We’ve found that this works out for us and we pack in a bunch of fun within an 8 hour evening. So, what makes an EPIC date night, you ask? Here’s a few things we’ve learned along the way, to plan our special evening.
1. Make an EPIC date plan.
We like to do unique things we wouldn’t normally do when we go out on our date night. This past month, we planned a couple of things. We went to dinner at North Market in Columbus, Ohio. It was delicious and unique to us since it’s not close to our home. After dinner we went to a bar that had 80’s and 90’s arcade games that you could play for free. We spent a few hours there until we ended up at another bar that played Karoake! Oh, yes we did. Because we knew where we were going before the night started, we had a blast and knew what we were doing from one event to the next. There was no “what do you want to do? I don’t’ care. What do you want to do?”
2. Prepare for your EPIC date, days before.
Before the big Saturday arrived, we had thought about what our kids would need at the babysitters and even what we would wear. As silly as that sounds, our days with the kids get so busy that we wanted to make sure we had everything we needed and didn’t have to worry about it that day. I had our clothes picked out and even picked out a new razor, The Schick Hydro 5 Sensitive at Giant Eagle, for my sensitive guy. You have to have a close EPIC shave on your EPIC date, right!?!
By the way, you know I love to save money. Because I purchased two participating Schick razors for my guy’s EPIC shave, we got two FREE movie tickets to use on a future date! Purchase 2 participating Men’s Schick® or Edge® products in a single transaction between 5/25/15 and 7/10/15 and submit your receipt. Find out more details here.
3. Get an EPIC babysitter.
Since we wanted to max out our time away from the kids with our carefully crafted plan, we got an EPIC babysitter. For us, that’s my parents. We actually had them watch the boys overnight so that we didn’t have to worry about what time we were getting home. Since I know that not everyone can do this, plan ahead and get your favorite babysitter for a late night. When you plan weeks in advance you’ll have your favorite at home, so that you don’t have to worry about the kids.
4. Go out with EPIC friends.
We planned our date night with another couple. And to be honest, they planned most of it since they know Columbus better than we do. We knew before that night that this couple was a great couple to go out with because we have so much fun with them. We all like each other, and have similar interests – and boundaries. We knew before the night started that we would have a great time, and they did not disappoint!
5. Have EPIC fun… and try not to talk about the kids.
Okay, we didn’t complete this 100%, but we really tried to hang out with each other and not talk about the kids all the time. It’s fun to go out and be adults and not just parents. I’m not going to say that we did anything crazy, because we’re still just us – but we did try to let lose and get out of our comfort zone. You can see this by my Karoake experience captured above. I sang Born to Fly by Sara Evans. It was so fun! And then of course, I sang a duet with our friend of Girls Just Want To Have Fun. Because, of course, we do.
