It’s no secret that it’s hard to get ready for the day with young kids. Yes, I could get up really early and pamper myself with lots of time to myself, but sleep always wins. The past six months I’ve finally gotten into a good routine to get my day started and it only takes me 30 minutes! I’ve never been one to take a long time in the morning. In fact, most of my life I wore no make-up at all because – well, it took time. I do wear a little makeup now, because I’m older and things like concealer have become my best friend. However, I still don’t take too long in the morning to get ready. I can sleep as late as possible and my husband can spend some time with the kids in the morning if I can get ready in 30 minutes or less. He leaves for work around 7:45 so I make sure to use my time wisely. I also use this routine at the YMCA three times a week when I go and swim.
Here’s how I rock my day with a quick 30 minutes to myself. (It’s even less in the winter, but now that the shorts are coming out I find that I have to shave my legs regularly. 🙂 )
The first thing I do when I wake up is brush my teeth. Since I usually wear about the same thing everyday, it doesn’t take me any time to pick out my clothes.
I take a quick 15 minute shower. I think this is where I could get behind with my time so I shower the same way every single day and have done so for years. Is that weird? Do you do that? Here’s what I do. I first shampoo my hair, and while that’s sitting, I wash my body. Lately I’ve been using St. Ives products like the St. Ives Oatmeal & Shea Butter Body Wash. The price is right. Plus I like that it’s made with 100% natural ingredients and is hypoallergenic.
Rinse. This is where my efficient mind works. I can rinse my hair and my body all at once. I told you, I’m weird.
I then put conditioner in my hair, and since I like it to sit a little longer because I swim and swimming is hard on my hair, I shave my legs. This is probably my favorite part of the shower, because Skintimate Strawberry Tangerine shave gel smells so good! I’ve been shaving with Intuition Revit, it leaves my legs really smooth. You can find both at Meijer.
I shave my legs at the end for a couple of reasons. I get a closer shave and because it makes everything feel complete. I use a shaver that has multiple blades to get a close shave the first time around and I also really like the Intuition Revit because of the added moisture it provides my legs during shaving. I don’t have time for nicks! I just want to rock my legs! (By the way, have you seen this video about shaving? Mama doesn’t want to be a porcupine.)
The last thing I do is wash my face. I used to break out a lot, even at my age, and I read somewhere that it can be the conditioner residue left on your forehead which was where I was breaking out. Since I’ve been washing my face at the end of my shower, it’s made a huge difference.
My entire shower takes less than 15 minutes. I towel off, get dressed and then moisturize my face. I can put my make-up on in less than 5 minutes. I use an eyeshadow, eyeliner, face cream/concealer, mascara and lip gloss. After drying my hair, I’m done! And I only dry my hair if I have somewhere to be that day, otherwise I let it air dry and it’s up in a ponytail for the rest of the day.
Less than 30 minutes and I’m ready to rock my day! It may only be 30 minutes but it makes me feel so good to take some time to myself to get my day started with a hot shower and clean clothes. When you stay at home with your kids, it’s the simple things, right? 🙂
