There are few things that I do, that I haven’t first researched how to do. I’m a firm believer that there are people who have gone before to perfect recipes and I should reap the rewards of such perfection. My Coleslaw recipe is an example of this.
We went to a cook-off last Saturday night hosted by my husband’s office. He told everyone in the office that I make famous coleslaw. This coming from my husband who’s never tried the famous coleslaw because it has mayonnaise in it. He hates mayonnaise or any other form of white sauce. But that’s a whole different post.
I know my coleslaw is good. It’s not famous. Did I mention this cook-off hangout was with the people he’s working with. The people he’d like to work with once the bar results are in and he can officially be offered a job. No pressure, Coleslaw.
The Coleslaw got rave reviews. I breath a sigh of relief as I write this.
Here’s the recipe.
Thanks to: www.allrecipes.com.
16 oz bag of Coleslaw
2TB diced onion (I use sweet yellow onion. The pretty red onion is too powerful.)
2/3 C mayonnaise
3 TB vegetable oil
1/2 C sugar
1 TB white vinegar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp poppy seed ( I used celery seed.)
Mix all ingredients except for the coleslaw. Add the coleslaw and mix carefully.
One point to make. The recipe is for a 16 oz. bag of Coleslaw. When I lived in Virginia Beach I couldn’t find a 16 oz. bag to save my life. I looked. So I had to change the entire recipe for a 20 oz. bag. Now that I’m back in Ohio they have 14 oz bags. What is up with the Coleslaw!
Here’s the adjusted recipe. I did heavy math with this one.
20 oz bag of Coleslaw
2TB 1 1/2 tsp diced onion
3/4 C 1 TB 1 tsp mayo 3 TB 2 1/4 tsp vegetable oil
1/2 C 2 TB sugar
1 TB 3/4 tsp white vinegar
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp poppy seeds ( I use celery seed.)
Okay, allrecipes has a recipe converter so I didn’t exactly do the most heavy math. You’re welcome.
I typically make the sauce the night before and let it hang out. I then add the coleslaw at least 3 hours before the party. I like it to soak in a bit.
I hope you enjoy the “famous” coleslaw!!
