DIY Chalboard Cookie Tins with Chalkboard Paint

Chalkboard Cookie Tins

Okay, I have the easiest DIY project today. Get a bottle of chalkboard spray paint and you’re halfway there! After knowing that I wanted to deliver some cookies to some special people in our life this year, I knew I wanted to have a fun cookie tin for the cookies. However, I didn’t want to spend a lot. I found some at the dollar tree but they just didn’t hit the mark. That’s when I thought about paint – and how fun it would be to spray paint the cookie tins with chalkboard paint to add our special note!

What I love about this Chalkboard Cookie Tins idea, is that you can make your gift very personal when you write your note on top.  You can also have your kids write on the top, which is what I plan to do with some of mine.  While there’s may not be much writing on it, since five year old’s have HUGE writing, I do think it will look super cute!

Ready to get started?

What you need to spray paint cookie tins

To make these you will need cookie tins.  You can use ones you already have or you can find ones like these like I did at the Dollar Tree.

Spray paint chalk board paint for cookie tins

You’ll want to rough up the tops a bit with some steel wool or sand paper.  (Make sure to wipe off any of the dust.)  And then spray paint them using chalkboard paint.  I used Rustoleum.  A pizza box makes a great base!  I ended up putting two coats on.  Follow the directions on the back of your spray paint bottle for the best results.

Let the chalkboard paint dry for a good 24 hours.  Don’t get antsy!  Once dry, you’ll want to rub the large side of the chalk all over and then wipe it off to prepare the chalkboard paint.  Write your message, and you’re done!

I love that I can leave a personal message but that the people receiving the Chalkboard Cookie Tins can also wipe it off to use the cookie tin again!  These also make great “boxes” for gifts!  Teacher gift?

Enjoy!

I bet these tins could come in handy for storing all sorts of things too. I love the idea of using it as a teacher gift. Thanks for the idea!

Don’t put your cookies in right away or they will taste like the spray.
