How to make a futon cover using fitted sheets! Create your own inexpensive diy futon cover using sheets in any style or color.
How to Make a Futon Cover
Here’s how I covered our futon with a fitted sheet. Are you looking to cover your futon inexpensively? I did not want to spend too much to cover ours, but wanted a unique color. Here’s what I did.
After moving to Ohio in 2010, our old futon cover didn’t match. Sure, I could have just let it go. But I couldn’t get past the scarlet cover against my blue/grey walls. I am a Buckeye fan, but this was too far for even me.
I searched online for the perfect match. I found the perfect futon cover. I just didn’t want to pay for it. I have expensive tastes, but I do not like spending money. That’s where a good garage sale or creativity comes in. And when I couldn’t find any, I called my mom.

Futon Sheets As DIY Futon Covers
If you’re looking to cover your futon whether you want a new look, or your futon has seen better days, you’ll need a fitted sheet to cover it.
- Visit Walmart and find your style of fitted sheets.
- Wash and dry your fitted sheet before adding to your futon.
- Make the futon with your fitted sheet.
- Attach sheet clips in the back of the futon to keep your DIY futon cover in place.
What Size Sheets Do I Purchase For My Futon?
The size of the sheets depends on the size of your futon. Our futon was a full size futon, therefore I purchased a full size fitted sheet. If you’re not sure, measure the length, width and depth of your futon using a tape measure.
- Twin-size futons are 39 inches x 75 inches
- Full-size futons are 54 inches x 75 inches
- Queen-size futons are 60 inches x 80 inches
Futon Sheets To Make Your Futon Cover
Here’s a few ideas I found while browsing around on the internet.
I spent $7 on a fitted sheet from Wal-Mart. I know! I tried to find a cute one that I loved everywhere but Wal-mart was where I found the perfect grey to go with my blue/gray walls. (How do you spell gray/grey anyways?)
So long story short. You can find the perfect cover for way less by using a fitted sheet. If you choose to go with a pattern, check TJMaxx or Target. They had some really cute ones that didn’t match my room, but may yours.
The best part of the fitted sheet futon cover is that two weeks after putting this ensemble together I spilled food all over it. I washed it. My coordinating office was back!
