I can’t believe my big kid is five! This past weekend we wanted to make a special night for him and celebrate his deep thinking, whole heart lovin’ sweet spirit with a party! I invited my family over for a grill out so that we could enjoy the outdoors together. The first thing on my mind was what to serve so we decided to go for grilled chicken and pineapple, hamburgers and Dr Pepper as one of our beverages! I don’t know what it is but Dr Pepper make me feel like a kid again. And since we were celebrating a kid – it made sense to enjoy a Dr Pepper with my brother and his family as well as my parents.
The entire day I was thinking about ways to decorate the deck while keeping it simple. I knew the five year old was only really worried about what presents he was getting. However, I wanted to make sure he knew how special he was, so I made sure to get creative with my decorations.
I also knew that in bringing home so much pop my husband was going to get into it before the big party. I decided to use that desire for Dr Pepper to my advantage! Off to Walmart we went!
We received an outdoor table last Christmas from my entire family. Ironically, we just put it out on our deck this past week. It was being stored in my brother’s barn as all big things that take time to put together end up – when life is busy! But like I said, I was on a mission to make this birthday boy feel special while also providing a relaxing evening for my family. We put the table together. The only thing missing was a centerpiece!
Now, when we’re talking outdoor decorations, we’re talking about decorations that need to stand the test of time. I wanted something that would make it feel like summer, but wasn’t too fancy for the outdoors. I also didn’t want something too big since we’d have six adults over for dinner. I decided to put together something with these awesome Dr Pepper bottles! I just love the look of the red and white. And when you’re creating a centerpiece you want different vases with difference heights. I think it’s more interesting.
To start this centerpiece I purchased a small crate from Walmart for $3.97. I also purchased brown acrylic paint.
I wanted the crate to look stained but I wasn’t about to break out the stain and the gloves and the smell. To be honest here, I was assembling this masterpiece the afternoon of the party. Time was of the essence. Instead of stain, I decided to add water to the brown paint. I used about a one to one ratio. I wanted the grain of the wood to shine through but also give it a darker shade.
Success! This was seriously so easy. I used a sponge brush and going with the grain, painting on the very thin paint. The other advantage to this was that it dried super fast. The entire thing was ready to use within 10 minutes.
I took the crate outside, along with the Dr Pepper bottles and a couple of ball jars I purchased at GoodWill this past year. I then put the Dr Pepper bottles that my husband so lovingly drank, into the center.
Just a few flowers and this centerpiece was done! I am really pleased how it turned out! It feels perfect for the BBQ since the Dr Pepper bottles are in there, but the flowers and crate give it that outdoor feel.
Of course the beauty of decorating with Dr Pepper bottles is that you get to keep the rest of the six pack for the guests!
Ah, summer. What do you think? If you’re having a #backyardbash grab a couple of bottles of Dr Pepper and create your own centerpiece. It’s amazing how some flowers really spruce up the table setting. And the best part is, you don’t need to spend a ton to get a great look!
What are some ways you’ve used pop bottles?
