DIY Reading Nook

By Lynette on May 15, 2015 ·

Diy Reading Nook Sauder

My kids love books.  They love them so much, they’re everywhere in our house.  They love them so much we’ve paid for a few library books we’ve “lost”.  With summer around the corner, I wanted to create a place for them to keep their library books but also read together.  And while we’ll still have time to read together in bed at night, the idea of setting up a special place for them, was very exciting – and practical.

To start, I needed to find a place for a little reading nook.  I decided to use the closet in our guest room.  For some reason, after we moved in, we never replaced the doors so the closet was really just housing a desk.  And since we don’t host too many guests, I decided a reading nook in the guest room was perfect.  To add to it, my older son spends his quiet time each afternoon in that room so as not to interrupt the three-year-old’s nap next door.  I wanted him to be able to take advantage of the space.

Putting together sauder tableTo start, I ordered a table from Sauder.  I wanted something that was bright and cheerful but also not too big and heavy.  This metal table was perfect.  It came in the mail in three pieces.  I can do this!

Making the tableEverything I needed to put together the furniture was included.  It literally took me 5 minutes.

Reading NookOnce I had the table together, I put it into the little closet and found things around the house to make it homey, including two antique child rocking chairs we have.  Each kid has their own seat.  I love to mix the old with the new.

LightI found this battery powered light and bought it right away.  It gives a camping sort of feel to the space and it’s solar powered.  The boys love it.  In the back is an antique Peter Pan print my mother-in-law gave us.  I thought it gave it all a whimsy feel.reading basketHere’s my favorite place in the entire reading nook.  It’s a special place to put all our library books.  Right now we have some of their favorites, but this summer when summer reading club becomes part of our weekly routine, we’ll be putting the library books in this one spot so that we can keep track of them!

DIY Reading NookThe boys love it and I love that they have a designated place to sit.  It works great during nap-time too.  My oldest feels like he has a special place.  I put this special place together by incorporating a new table and lantern.  Everything else I found around our home which saved me money.  My design was featured in Sauder’s LookBook, so make sure to check it out!
