Key Ingredients
- All-Purpose Flour: This is the foundation for your biscuit recipe. It is what gives structure to your biscuits and makes them tender and flaky.
- Baking Powder: This ingredient is crucial in creating the rise in your biscuits. It interacts with the other ingredients to create carbon dioxide gas, which gives the biscuits their light, airy texture.
- Granulated Sugar: A touch of sugar enhances the flavor of the biscuits without making them overly sweet. It also aids in achieving a golden brown color on the outside.
- Salt: Don’t underestimate the power of salt! It enhances the overall flavor of your biscuits, making the other ingredients taste even better.
- Salted Butter: The fat in this recipe gives it a beautiful buttery flavor. Cold butter is key to achieving those flaky layers in your homemade biscuits. The cold butter creates pockets of steam as it melts in the oven, leading to the desired flakiness. Remember to keep it in the refrigerator until you need it.
- Milk: Milk adds moisture to the biscuit dough, helping to create a tender crumb. It also contributes to the rich taste of the biscuits.
Equipment
- Large Mixing Bowl – This is where you’ll combine your dry ingredients, including all-purpose flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt. It is also where you’ll cut in the cold butter and add the milk to form your biscuit dough.
- Biscuit Cutter – This tool is essential to cut out round biscuits from the dough. If you don’t have one, a round glass or cookie cutter can work as a substitute.
- Baking Pan – You’ll need a baking pan to place your biscuits on before putting them in the oven. The recipe doesn’t specify a size, but make sure it’s big enough to fit all your biscuits without them touching.
How to Make Easy Homemade Biscuits
Preparation
Start by preheating your oven to a temperature of 425° F. This will guarantee that your oven is hot enough for the biscuits to bake evenly and rise beautifully.
Step 1 – Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine your dry ingredients. This includes purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir these ingredients together to ensure they are well-mixed.
Step 2 – Incorporate the Butter
The key to flaky layers in your homemade biscuits is cold butter. Cut the cold butter into small pieces and add it to your dry ingredients. You can use a pastry cutter or a fork to cut in the butter until the mixture looks like small peas.
Step 3 – Add Milk
Step 4 – Knead and Fold the Dough
Slowly pour in about a cup of whole milk, stirring the biscuit dough with a fork as you go. You want your dough to be slightly sticky, but not too wet. Feel free to add a bit more milk if needed.
Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Fold the dough over onto itself about ten times. This process will create those tender, flaky layers we all love in homemade biscuits.
Step 5 – Cut the Biscuits
Flatten your biscuit dough with your hands until it’s about an inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out round biscuits from the dough.
Step 6 – Bake the Biscuits
Place your cut biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Position them in your preheated oven and bake for about twelve to fifteen minutes. You’ll know they’re done when they turn a gorgeous golden brown color.
Serve these warm, tender biscuits with some honey butter or jam for an extra touch of flavor. Enjoy the taste of your easy homemade biscuits!
Expert Tips
- Use Cold Butter: To guarantee flaky layers in your biscuits, it is crucial to use cold butter. Keep the butter in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it, and if your biscuits are ready before your oven is fully preheated, place the baking pan in the refrigerator to keep the biscuits cold.
- Handle Dough Sparingly: The less you handle the biscuit dough, the better. Overworking the dough can lead to tough biscuits. Try to touch the dough as little as possible to keep the butter from melting.
- Flour Generously: If your dough is sticking to your hands or the lightly floured surface, don’t hesitate to add more flour. This will make the dough easier to handle and prevent it from sticking to the biscuit cutter.
- Preheat the Oven: Preheating your oven to the right temperature is key for golden brown biscuits. An oven that’s not hot enough can lead to flat, hard biscuits, so make sure that your oven is preheated to the correct temperature before baking.
- Choose the Right Baking Pan: To get the best bake on your homemade biscuits, use a dark baking pan. Dark pans absorb heat more efficiently, leading to a better rise and a crisper exterior.
- Use a Biscuit Cutter: For perfectly round biscuits, use a biscuit cutter. Press straight down and avoid twisting the cutter for the best results.
Recipe Variations
- Add Herbs: For an aromatic flavor, add a tablespoon of finely chopped fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme to your biscuit dough. The herbs will give your biscuits a beautiful color and a savory flavor that pairs well with soups and stews.
- Make it Whole Wheat: For a healthier option, replace half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. This will give your biscuits a nuttier flavor and more fiber, but they’ll still have the same flaky layers you love.
- Try it with Buttermilk: Substitute the milk with buttermilk for a richer, more delicious biscuit. Buttermilk biscuits are a bit more dense but equally delicious.
What to Serve With
- Start your morning off right by enjoying these homemade biscuits warm from the oven, slathered with honey butter. The sweetness of the honey perfectly compliments the biscuit’s flaky layers and rich flavor.
- For a savory twist, serve these biscuits with a hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup. The tender biscuits are perfect for soaking up the rich broth and make for a comforting meal.
- Create a delicious dessert by using these biscuits as a sweet sandwich. Spread strawberry jam between two biscuits for a simple yet satisfying treat. The tartness of the jam nicely balances the buttery richness of the biscuits.
- These biscuits also make a fantastic side for a dinner of roast chicken or beef stew. They’re perfect for mopping up any tasty sauces left on your plate.
- For a delicious snack, top a warm biscuit with a slice of cheese. As the cheese melts onto the biscuit, it enhances the biscuit’s flavor and adds a creamy texture.
- Hosting a brunch? These homemade biscuits are perfect on a buffet table. Serve them with a selection of jams, honey, and cheeses for guests to customize their own delicious biscuits.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can definitely make these homemade biscuits ahead of time. Simply prepare the biscuit dough, cut out your biscuits using a biscuit cutter or glass, then freeze them separately. Once they’re fully frozen, you can store them in an airtight container or freezer bag. When you’re ready to bake, just place them in the oven while still frozen, and add a bit more baking time until they’re fully baked and golden brown.
While a biscuit cutter is a great tool for getting perfect round biscuits, you can also use a drinking glass to cut the biscuits into shape. Just make sure the rim of the glass is clean and sharp enough to cut through the biscuit dough.
For this biscuit recipe, I use salted butter because it is typically what I have on hand. If you only have unsalted butter, you can simply add an additional quarter teaspoon of salt to the recipe. This will help make sure that the biscuits have the right balance of flavors.
Storing and Reheating
- Refrigerate: After your biscuits have cooled, place them in an airtight container. They can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two days.
- Freeze: Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, let thaw at room temperature for at least an hour.
- Reheating Instructions: To warm up your refrigerated biscuits, preheat your oven to a low temperature. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and heat them until they are warm to the touch and golden brown once again. Avoid microwaving them as it can make them tough.

The best I’ve made from scratch! I’ve tried many recipes, all similar to this one but using buttermilk instead of the 2% milk I had on hand. 2% will be my go to going forward. The biscuits had good rise which I’m particularly excited about as I struggled to get this result with buttermilk recipes. Super tasty, super simple. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Thanks so much for letting me know about your success! They are a great biscuit!

So easy to make, perfect consistency and they’re delicious! I want to ask though because I’m a little confused — in the elongated written recipe above the “recipe card” it says that both baking powder and baking soda are called for; however, the recipe card only calls for baking powder. Is baking soda supposed to be included? If so, how much?

So glad you enjoyed them! Looks like I had a typo in there. Thanks for catching it. I’ve fixed it to remove any confusion. No baking soda in this recipe!

If the cold butter is so important, I’d recommend having some pictures during that step of what the butter should look like and what the dough should look like after. Also the ads on this site are obnoxious, they covered the recipe so I had to keep refreshing…

This recipe I tried to follow to the letter. However, based on the recipe description, I did not have a pebble like dough after cutting in butter. Still some loose flour so I added 2 more tablespoon of butter until I achieved the description. I then added the milk but still didn’t come together into dough. I added milk until it did. Made 6 biscuits. Cooked at 12 min. Perfect!
