Easy Shortcake Recipe Ingredients

- 4 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/3 Cup sugar
- 1/2 Cup shortening
- 3/4 Cup milk
My dad has grown strawberries in his garden for the last seven years. When he found out we were pregnant with our first child, he planted his strawberry plants. He had grown them when I was younger, but they are a lot of work. Now with grandkids, it’s very exciting to pick strawberries alongside the boys.
Above is a snapshot of my boys picking strawberries a few years ago. The boys only made it to the back porch before chowing down. Well, actually they were eating them in the garden, but as soon as they were to the house, it was all in.
How Do You Prepare Strawberries for Strawberry Shortcake?
I like to cut the strawberries in half or quarters depending on the size of the strawberry. Then add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar. Give it a little stir and let them sit on the counter. The longer the better! This is a great afternoon step to prepare for dinner. The longer they sit the more syrup the strawberries will produce. YUM!
How Do You Make A Strawberry Shortcake?
Step 1 – Mix the Dry Ingredients Together
It’s amazing how many things you can make with these simple ingredients! Mix the dry ingredients of flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.
Step 2 – Cut in the Shortening and add the Milk
Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the shortening is small like peas in size. Add 3/4 cup of milk and stir until just blended. I use a fork. Do not overmix!
Step 3 – Add to Greased 9 Inch Pan
Once mixed. Grease a 9 inch pan. Add the mixture. It will be thick. Lightly pat it into the corners so that the cake is even.
Step 4 – Bake at 450° F
Bake in a 450 degree Fahrenheit oven for 12 – 15 minutes. It will be a lovely golden brown. Let it cool for a about 5 to 10 minutes and then enjoy it warm!
