Grilling out is one of our favorite things to do as a family in the summer. There’s a couple of reasons you’ll find us out on our back deck on most evenings, cooking our dinner. One, I love that I don’t have to cook. My husband handles the grilling. And two, it’s fun to be able to grill and allow the kids to run around the yard at the same time. With a three and five year old, giving them the chance to run around and be kids while we’re cooking outside is one of our favorites.
And while we grill out often, I had yet to find a way to make dessert for the kids using the grill. Until now. It dawned on me while I was making cookie dough, that I should try to grill the cookies. There’s no point to heating up the oven inside when the air conditioner is running! This past Sunday I wanted to make something special to celebrate summer, and decided that my attempt at grilling a cookie – was perfect.
And while the grilled cooking was amazing, we decided to go all out and top it with our favorite sundae toppings. It was out of this world, good! Are you ready to find out how to make a grilled cookie sundae?
The first thing I needed was a good cookie dough recipe. I used this Hershey’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe. It really was perfect for this, because you want a dough that is not real thick. The grill will dry out the cookie dough as it cooks, more so than a traditional oven. Of course, you can also just buy the cookie dough at your local grocery store if you want to make things really easy.
Once I had my cookie dough, I made a little boat with foil. I wanted to be able to build the sundae right on top of the hot cookie. Yum, right!? Plus, it’s less mess. Make sure to spray the foil with cooking spray before adding your dough.
While the cookies are cooking, you can watch the kids play. Sprinklers are the best thing ever!
I put the cookies in the grill when it was heated to around 375 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s really important you have a temperature gauge to make sure you have the right amount of heat. It’s also important to put the cookies over indirect heat so that the bottoms don’t burn. We have a little shelf and that’s where I put the cookies. You can see how nicely they cooked up. They were ready in about 8 minutes.
My kids wanted to just eat the cookies right away with quite an intensity. I of course, wanted to build my own sundae.
I topped it with my favorites plus Hershey’s Syrup. I had to pile it high really quickly because it was hot outside and it started to melt – fast! The combination of the hot cookie made this sundae look sooooo good!
I then topped it with whipped cream and a cherry – of course. Hershey’s Syrup is available in a variety of flavors including chocolate, Special Dark Chocolate, strawberry and caramel. My personal favorite is the original, but my husband was super excited about the caramel. And I have to admit, the Special Dark Chocolate was REALLY good, too. I might have tried all of them by the end of the evening…
as evidenced by this picture. I totally poured more chocolate on top – in the end. Like I said, don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect. Mine was a jumbled mess of goodness. It didn’t matter. It was melting so fast, I just wanted to dig in!
That’s what I loved most about this dessert. It was fun to spend more time outside and it didn’t matter how messy it got because of the foil boats.
What do you think? Will you try this grilled cookie sundae?

These look amazing! We use our grill every night right now and dessert is something I haven’t tackled yet.
Have fun with them! My kids thought they were awesome!
Oh my! Did you hear that noise? You know the sound of breaking glass? That was the sound of my diet flying out the window. Oh! Help me! Looks AMAZING and the kiddos (I mean taste testers) look very satisfied. Will you let us know when your neighbor moves? Just sayin’!
Haha, thanks!
