Harvest is the word for this month. Finally harvest arrived and thankfully we are done. This month brought lots of foggy mornings, beautiful leaves on the trees and many trips to the elevator to haul soybeans and corn. It was a busy month, but it was a good one.
Unlike last year, the harvest latest only weeks and didn’t drag on for which we are thankful. That being said, it was shorter because the yields were down from the tough year we had. My brother also did less corn this year which cuts down on the time as well. Corn has a higher yield. The soybeans and corn may look similar as you can see from a bit of a spill during the harvest, but they are very different.
All that being said, it remains one of my favorite times of the year. The leaves are starting to change. There is excitement in the air. You can visit my recap on the last harvest of 2018 and 2017 here.
Harvest was a bit uneventful. We did have our annual mis-hap when it came to the dump truck. This year again, a wheel fell off. And this year again, the wagon was full when it did. Thankfully it didn’t happen on the side of the road but smack dab in the middle of the elevator. It was easier to fix and no one was hurt. So we can’t be too sad about it. We also didn’t have to hand dig out all the corn from the wagon. Last year it was the beans.
The first night my boys found out their uncle was in the fields, they wanted to jump into the car and see him. They rode in the combine and also enjoyed finding all the bean plants he had missed around the edges. They wanted to take some home. I had to remind them we had acres and acres of soybeans surrounding our home that their uncle would soon be harvesting. Ha!
One big project we got done at our house was we FINALLY planted grass where the barn had been. Before harvest really kicked off my brother came over and helped us to smooth out the dirt. We planted grass and we’re still hoping it will grow. We should be covering the area with straw… but the wind is so strong this time of year that it just blows away. We’ll keep hoping the grass soon arrives.
In big news, we got a dog. We’ve been looking for awhile. The boys have begged for a dog for about their entire life. We just needed to find the right fit. We found Bella at the nearby humane society and things so far are going pretty smoothly. She ran away from us once and my oldest was found to be running through the field in only his socks… but we found her and we’ve kept a closer eye on her. We’re looking forward to getting her a bit more trained so she can have more freedom.
She enjoyed riding with me to the elevator for a few days as I hauled corn and soybeans for my brother. She loves to be around us and is really sweet.
All in all this month was filled with the harvest. I took a trip to Austin for a conference and then back again for harvest. I’m looking forward to slowing it down this month which sounds ironic since Thanksgiving is around the corner. But the reality is, as it gets colder, our schedule slows. We go into a bit of hibernation and although I prefer the fall weather, I’m looking forward to some relaxing moments this winter.
Remind me of that when I’m freezing…. 🙂
