My five year old loves Captain America. He loves every character that makes him feel like a superhero! Kids at five are just fun. And so when I had the chance to make a cake that could have superhero qualities, I decided to go for it. Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m no artist when it comes to decorating a cake. In fact, it’s been one of my dreams to take a cake decorating class so that I could make a homemade cake look good. However, it’s not in the schedule right now, so I typically turn to M&Ms™. Grab a bag of M&Ms and you can make any kind of design you want, even a superhero design! (By the way, have you seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier? It’s now out on DVD.)
My first stop was Walmart to get the supplies. This kid and I grabbed the cake mix, icing as well as M&Ms! There are so many options today when it comes to what M&Ms to purchase. Decisions. Decisions. I went with the biggest bag of M&Ms I could find. Why not? I never complain when there are leftovers.
By the way, here’s a great coupon to use!
I’m anti-crumb with my icing, so I typically do a thin layer first. It gets all the crumbs together and it doesn’t matter if the crumbs get on my knife.
After the thin layer comes the thick layer! This one is my favorite. It covers up all the crumbs so that you get a nice, clean look.
Here’s the thing with M&Ms. They’re super easy to use for cake decorating. They come in different colors. And most importantly, they are made of chocolate. Amen.
For this design I wanted to replicate the Captain America logo. I first etched the center of the icing with a knife. It didn’t have to be perfect. I just wanted to have some kind of guideline with the M&Ms. I also separated out the M&Ms so I was ready to go with the colors!
I started with the star. Not bad, right? I just followed the lines!
Here’s the final product! I think it turned out great!

I love using things like M&M’s to decorate a cake. I’m hopefully as getting a clean design otherwise. #client
I love it! One of my tricks is to use a cookie cutter to outline the shape–I’ve made a similar cake with blueberries for the 4th of July, but honestly, I think chocolate beats blueberries every day!
Love that idea. I thought about a cookie cutter but I didn’t have a star. It would have made it easier, for sure!
