I lost my grandma a little over a year ago. It still seems surreal. I grew up near her and spent many days at her home enjoying her company, her laughter and her whit. She was 96 when she left us. Decades of her life and who she is, was left behind in her home. Having grown up in the depression you can imagine the number of items she left for us. From newspaper bills to Hummels, it was all there. And because she was no longer present in my life, I wanted something of hers to use every day to remind me of her.
One of the things I chose were her pfaltzgraff dishes. She used them all the time to entertain. Every birthday and Christmas feast was eaten off these dishes. My grandpa never liked them because he thought they were loud. 🙂 But my grandma didn’t care. She just kept entertaining. I decided to use these dishes for our everyday and not just for special occasions. They’re nice and thick and microwavable. Not to mention, I love the look of them.
The first task was to find where to put all the dishes. I put all the plates where our old plates were but there were quite a few mugs! I decided to put all the mugs in my cookbook cabinet. I just love how each mug is a little different. No two are alike. I keep them on display because of their look but also to keep them out of my boy’s hands. They have broken two plates already. 🙁
Because these are my grandma’s dishes, I want to use the best to clean them. And the next best thing is the dishwasher. Momma doesn’t have time to hand wash!! I grabbed the Quantum Finish Free & Clear at Walmart. We were out of dishwasher detergent and so I ran in before church. I love the little packets because it’s easy to know how much to add to the dishwasher. Knowing how much to add to your dishwasher is just one less thing to think about.
By the way, Finish is on rollback through October at Walmart. Here’s a coupon.
Why Finish? My dishwasher doesn’t really give me a choice, but I’m glad it picked Finish. I find that it gets all the grime off my dishes without leaving a residue. I’m all about getting the grime off as I’m not the best at rinsing my dishes. I feel like if I have a dishwasher it should do the heavy work. Plus, it’s gentle enough for grandma’s dishes.
Now if only I could find a dishwasher that could empty itself.
All clean! Last Sunday my siblings and I threw a 40th anniversary dinner for my parents on these plates. It is like everything came full circle. I absolutely love these dishes and I plan to take good care of them for the next generation.
What dishwasher detergent do you use?

This post made me seem very old. This was the dish pattern I picked out as a bride in 1972. I loved these dishes too, but have gone on to other things. I’m happy that they are bringing you good memories. The pattern is still available in many thrift stores around here. (Utah) So if some get broken, they can be replaced.
Those are my dishes! They are still available on the Pfaltzgraff website as it is a super popular pattern so no worries should you break a plate or two!! Oh, you have my tablecloth too 🙂
No way! We’re table twins! I absolutely love these. Thanks for the tips on buying them online. I definitely need to look into that.
Thanks for the tip Debbie!
