Why I Love This Recipe
- Quick and Easy: Making classic pies doesn’t have to be tricky. This recipe is incredibly quick and easy, making it perfect for beginners too!
- Classic Flavors: This recipe sticks to the traditional ingredients, resulting in a pecan pie with classic, time-tested flavors.
- Not Overly Rich and Sweet: A lot of pecan pies are very very rich in flavor in my opinion. This recipe is sweet without being overly rich. I like it a lot better, and I’m sure you will too.

Key Ingredients
- Large Eggs: These will help to bind the other ingredients together and add a rich, creamy texture to the pie.
- Light Corn Syrup: This sweet, thick liquid will help to sweeten the pie and give it a slightly gooey texture.
- Granulated Sugar: This will add extra sweetness to the pie and help to balance the flavors of the other ingredients.
- All-Purpose Flour: This will help to thicken the pie filling, giving it a more substantial texture.
- Butter: This will add a rich, buttery flavor to the pie and help to make the filling smooth and creamy.
- Pecans: These will add a nutty flavor and a bit of crunch to the pie, making it more interesting to eat.
- Unbaked Pie Shell: This will hold the pie filling and provide a flaky, buttery crust that contrasts nicely with the sweet, creamy filling.
Equipment
- 9” Pie Plate – You’ll need this to hold your unbaked pie shell and ensure it bakes into a perfect pie shape.
- Electric Mixer – This is essential for beating the eggs and mixing the sugar, flour, and other ingredients to achieve a smooth, well-blended filling.
- Bowl – This is where you’ll beat the eggs and mix all the other ingredients before pouring them into the pie shell.

How to Make Southern Pecan Pie
Preparation
Begin by preheating your oven to 450˚ F. This will make sure that it’s at the right temperature when you’re ready to bake your pie.

Step 1 – Combine the Base Ingredients
In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Then, add the sugar and flour, and mix until they are well incorporated. Next, mix in the corn syrup for a sweet, sticky base.

Step 2 – Add the Butter and Nuts
Once your base is ready, it’s time to add the melted butter. This will give your pie a rich, buttery flavor. Then, stir in the chopped pecans for a nutty crunch.

Step 3 – Pour into the Pie Shell
Now that your filling is prepared, pour it into your unbaked pie shell. Make sure to spread it out evenly for a perfect pie.
Step 4 – Bake the Pie
Place your pie in the preheated oven and bake it at 450˚ F. for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, without opening the oven, turn the heat down to 350˚ F and bake for an additional 30 minutes. This will help to set the filling and cook the pie shell to a beautiful golden brown.

Step 5 – Let the Pie Cool
Once your pie is baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool for at least 2 hours before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the pie to firm up, making it easier to slice and serve. Enjoy your delicious, homemade Southern pecan pie!

Expert Tips
For the best results, make sure to use a standard 9” pie plate for this southern pecan pie recipe. A deep dish pie plate will be too deep for the filling in the pie recipe, which may result in the pie not setting properly.
Add one tablespoon of flour to the base of the unbaked pie shell before adding your filling to avoid a soggy bottom crust.
Recipe Variations
- Chocolate: Add 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the pie filling before baking. The combination of chocolate and pecans is a delicious twist on the classic pecan pie.
- Maple Syrup: Substitute the light corn syrup with pure maple syrup for a rich, caramel-like flavor.
- Bourbon: Add 2 tablespoons of bourbon to the filling mixture for a boozy, flavorful pecan pie. The alcohol bakes off during the cooking process, leaving a unique, sophisticated flavor.
- Bars: Instead of using a pie shell, pour the pecan pie filling over a layer of shortbread in a baking dish. Once baked and cooled, cut into bars for a portable, easy-to-eat treat.

What to Serve With
- For a classic Southern dessert, serve this pecan pie with a dollop of whipped cream on top. The lightness of the cream complements the rich, sweet pie perfectly.
- If you’re a fan of contrasting flavors and temperatures, try serving this pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cold, creamy ice cream is a great match for the warm, gooey pecan pie.
- For a truly delicious dessert, serve this pecan pie with a drizzle of caramel sauce. The extra sweetness and caramel flavor will take this pie to the next level.
