Watermelon-Stars-for-Patriotic-Centerpiece-or-Snack

Do you need a healthy, quick and easy snack or centerpiece for your patriotic cookout this weekend?  I’ve got one for you that will be a big hit with the kids – and the adults too!

Every Memorial day we travel to a nearby small town to attend their parade.  But most importantly, they have the most beautiful ceremony following the parade at their cemetery.  The kids lay flowers on the graves and many of the area children sing patriotic songs before taps is played and a moment of silence is observed.  It truly is a moment to reflect on those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the service, we head to my parent’s home to grill out together.  This year I’m bringing a snack that the kids will love.  It will also serve as a great centerpiece for the day!  If your kids are like my kids, they will be hungry as soon as you get to the grill out – but the food is not ready yet.  I can prep these ahead and they can enjoy a great, healthy snack before we eat!  #winning

First, slice a watermelon into slices that are about 1 inch thick.  Be careful!  Cutting a watermelon is not the easiest thing ever.  Once cut, use a star cookie cutter to make your shapes. This is a great step for kids if they want to help.

Don’t have a star cookie cutter?  Purchase a star cookie cutter here.

You can use bamboo skewers but I chose to pick up some festive straws at Hobby Lobby.  If you don’t have a hobby lobby near you, you can purchase straws on Amazon here.

Put the watermelon stars on the straws and you’re almost ready!  They are really sturdy with the straws.  The kids can wave them around (to a certain extent) and have fun eating them too!

Place the stars in a mason jar of blueberries – and you have double the healthy snack!  It could seriously not be easier!

I hope you have a great holiday weekend!
