Simple Favorites & Life at our Farmhouse (January 2018)

By Lynette on January 30, 2018 · 3 Comments

Snow!  That’s the word that comes to mind when I think back on this past month.  Maybe it should be the word, cold.  Either way, it was definitely winter this past month.  To be honest, I’ll take the snow and sun over a gloomy winter any day.  While the boys’ winter vacation seemed to drag on FOREVER, we’re now back into a routine.  I love looking back at the month and seeing the fun we had this past month at our home.  The days go by so fast that it’s nice to take a moment to reflect.

One of the highlights was finally getting enough snow that we could snowmobile!  My brother and dad own some older (I mean… really old) snowmobiles that they’ve kept running over the years. It is so much fun!  Snowmobiling is definitely one of my favorite things.  It’s so peaceful and quite on the back fields when no one else is around but you and the snow.

My brother also purchased a sleigh that we could pull the kids in years ago and they always have such a good time.

Why would they not?  They’re all warm and toasty, living the life!

We also enjoyed ice skating in the back fields.  We have a little stock pond on my parent’s property that’s probably only a foot deep.  With the extreme cold we had for weeks, it was frozen solid.  It was the perfect place to ice skate with the kids!

My brother bought ice skates that attach to their boots.  They’re perfect so that as their feet grow we won’t have to buy ice skates each year.  However, I’m planning to buy a few larger sizes for the boys as they were almost too big for these straps.

It was just soooo beautiful back in the fields.  We won’t be skating any triple double luxes – but the kids don’t care.  It’s always great to get outside and wear them out in the winter.

We also enjoyed sledding in our front yard.  I’m sorry for the all the snow pictures – but that was pretty much our life this past month.  I caught my son throwing a snowball – can you see it?

In addition to the snow, the town near us hosted a circus.  It was pretty good.  We’ve gone to the large circuses in the past but this one was much more budget friendly. And to be honest, the talent was just as great.  My favorite is always the elephants.

A personal highlight for me was discovering a new coffee shop in our little big town that I could work at.  It has super fast internet which is key since ours is beamed from a silo.  (I’m not kidding.)  I went to update my computer and what was going to be 3 days at home only took 10 minutes at the coffee shop.   I’m super excited to work there this year.

In terms of working on the house, I have a few small projects.  We finally got my husband’s grandfather’s desk upstairs.  It didn’t fit when we tried to move it upstairs when we moved in, but we strategically like jenga masters got it upstairs over the weekend!  I hope to transform our office.  We also *think* we may have finally killed the moles in the front year.  I have no pictures of that because I can’t even think about it without getting incredibly angry – at the moles.

I am working on a project this week I hope to share with you soon. We have my grandma’s hutch that is a bit “heavy” in the room.  I am the first to say that painting antique solid wood is a sin.  I just can’t handle seeing antiques painted.  However, this is a 1970’s pine hutch that has tons of storage and to make it look more fitting in the space, I’m going to paint parts of it.  I photoshopped what I think it’s going to look like.  Please forgive all the painters tape.  I am NOT painting the woodwork.  It’s there to help keep the draft out of the house.  We’re fancy.  😂

What do you think of the hutch?  Do you like the color?

I hope you had a fantastic January!  Here’s to more sunny days!  ☀️

I really enjoy your life on the farm. The pond is an ideal place to skate, being so shallow. I miss the farm I grew up on and now it is sold and the beautiful farm house was torn down.

I can not wait to make this Chicken Enchiladas Casserole. OMG! it looks amazing.
I do like the hutch and yes, i feel for you when painting antique furniture. I like the color too!
I enjoyed your January blog and the loved all of the snow pictures! The ice skating brought back memories of me and my siblings when we were growing up. We would make an ice skating rink in the back yard! My brother Tim was a hockey player so he decided to make a “rink” to practice on at home. I got pretty good at skating too. What fun memories. 🙂
    Love your blog!

I love the color of the hutch! I understand completely about painting antique furniture but sometimes it just has to be done. That color will look beautiful with all the wood color in your gorgeous home! I cannot wait to see it finished!
